I see the Labour hacks' are busy writing letters to try to discredit the Lib-Dems, notably Sheila Jones (April 17) and Harry Bowling (April 18).
As a member of the Lib-Dem Executive, which was the largest party in Bolton between 2004 and 2006, I was proud of what we achieved following 24 years of Labour- a very stagnant Labour Party for many of the latter years.
Some of the highlights included: l The regeneration of Bolton town centre, which will gather pace. Most schemes saw the light of day under our control. We also introduced the award-winning Bolton Brand.
l Reductions in most crime.
l Increased recycling rates - from the pathetic eight per cent we inherited to around 30 per cent l Improved highway department efficiencies and resources l Cleaner streets (official) l Extra investment in parks, which later resulted in Green Flag status All this was done in 22 months. Not bad - and done with an executive of eight councillors.
"Jobs for the boys" Labour appointed 10, which is the maximum allowed.
We made mistakes but overall, those two years were very successful.
Roger Hayes Leader, Bolton Lib-Dem Group
