A COUPLE of images stick in my mind from recent news bulletins during the Christmas period. The first was of a Virgin Atlantic passenger jet stranded on the runway at Heathrow airport. The airplane and runway was covered in snow. Keeping it company was a lone snowplough that was working feverishly in what seemed like a white wilderness.

The other image was of the runway at New York after a very extreme snowfall. The runway was covered with numerous snowploughs and other vehicles that were succeeding in clearing the snow. It was a marvellous sight seeing so much manpower and equipment being used to solve the problem.

The two contrasting images highlights crux of the problem in the UK with regards to most of the services provided for the general public.

Whilst it is true that you do not attempt to crack a nut with a sledgehammer, we are left with a situation were in every public service we attempt to crack a nut with a feather!
