THOSE romantic, misguided souls who believe a soccer league can survive the test of time in the United States should take take a look at what happened when they tried to bring American football to Europe.

The NFL European League was finally scrapped this week after a 16-year experiment which just couldn't overcome tradition.

The same will inevitably happen to the MLS league in the States despite the hype coming off David Beckham's move there.

They've tried to make soccer work in the States before, but even the attraction of legends like Pele, George Best, Johan Cryuff, Franz Beckenbauer, Bobby Moore, Eusebio, Carlos Alberto, Gordon Banks, Rodney Marsh and Gerd Muller wasn't enough 30 years ago.

Culture, tradition and taste dictate that Europeans will never take to American football in enough numbers to establish a thriving league, and the same goes for soccer in North America.
