JUSTIN Gatlin's positive drug test is yet another nail in athletics' coffin.
How are kids supposed to develop an interest in athletics if the major stories that emerge within the sport are all about illegal performance-enhancing substances?
Athletics fans in this country were just coming to terms with Dwain Chambers returning to competition after a drugs ban when it was revealed that joint world 100m record holder Gatlin had tested positive for testosterone.
The sport is so riddled with drug-tainted athletes that all competitors, especially those who make rapid improvement, are in danger of falling under suspicion.
Athletics must be seen to be clean and the only way to do that is to test the world's top 50 or 100 athletes on a daily basis.
