CHELSEA are taking the point away from football the decimal point.

It shows just how rich they are that the numbers they pay for their players are the same as those paid by most other Premiership clubs, except they don't bother with the decimal point in the middle.

A figure of £25million is being talked about for Ashley Cole, while £30million has already been paid for Andriy Shevchenko this summer and £16million for John Obi Mikel to add to the £24million for both Didier Drogba and Michael Essien and £21million for Shaun Wright-Phillips in recent times.

Stick a decimal point in the middle of those numbers and that's the kind of number paid by most other Premiership clubs.

Even Manchester United can't compete and the £18.3million they paid for Michael Carrick may only have been made possible by the £12million they got from Chelsea for Mikel following the row over the player's signature.

Despite their domination of the English transfer market, Chelsea are good for the Premiership because they will drag the standard of football higher. as Manchester United did in the 1990s and Liverpool for 15 years before that.
