ST PETER’S Parish Church dominates the skyline in this 1960s old photograph.
The picture was taken just before the network of streets at the bottom of Churchgate was demolished.
The Grand Theatre is just visible to the right of the picture.
The other image shows the church in more recent times.
What you may be surprised to know — and the information was kindly supplied by church warden Cllr John Walsh — the current Parish Church only dates back to the same time as the Civic Centre build so the 1930s.
There have been other churches on the site but this current, magnificent, building is relatively young.
It really is an impressive structure on our skyline.
