Residents have voiced their shock after a serious crash between two cars in Bromley Cross.

The collision happened on Darwen Road shortly before midday.

Emergency services were called and a police cordon was set up between Hough Lane and Windsor Road.

At around 2.30pm, a police officer on the scene confirmed that the cordon would likely still be in place for "a few hours".

Greater Manchester Police (GMP), fire and ambulance vehicles were present at the scene, including two air ambulances.

Four people were taken to hospital with "serious" injuries following the crash.

A North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) spokesperson said: "We took a call at 11:50am today (Thursday) to reports of a road traffic collision on Darwen Road.

"We sent a number of resources to scene including four ambulances, three rapid response ambulances and two air ambulances.

"We treated four patients with serious injuries and took them to hospital, three to Salford Royal and one to Royal Bolton."

A GMP spokesman said: "It is believed to be a two-car road traffic collision.

"GMP were called to the Darwen Road junction at around midday with other emergency services in attendance.

"The extent of the injuries sustained are not known this time, but is an ongoing serious incident so limited detail at the moment.

"Delays are expected as a result."

The fire service confirmed its attendance too.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before midday today (Thursday 30 March) we received a report about a road traffic collision on Darwen Road, Bromley Cross, involving two vehicles.

“Four fire engines from Bolton Central, Bolton North, and Farnworth fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene, where firefighters worked swiftly to extricate three people from one of the vehicles using specialist rescue equipment before transferring them into the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Four people conveyed to hospital by NWAS. GMFRS crews remain in attendance at this time."

One resident who lives near to the crash said: "I heard it, it was loud.

"You can see the state of the cars.

I've lived here for 16 years and there have probably been about seven serious incidents on this stretch of road. 

"I just really feel for the people who were in the cars. 

"We couldn't see much, but the emergency services were here so fast. There were a lot of ambulances, two fire engines and police."

She added: "It doesn't normally happen during the day, the other crashes here have been at night. 

"I have silver blankets in the porch because there have been that many accidents here."

A shopkeeper said: “Two air ambulances arrived.

"The cordon appeared just after midday. It doesn’t really happen very often, quite a large accident like this.”

Bromley Cross Cllr Samantha Connor, who was near the crash, said: "There is a big police presence here now.

"There are two air ambulances parked at a local park and the road is closed.

"I heard it was a head-on collision with two cars.

"It's tragic what's happened and I do hope everyone involved is OK, as it looks like a very serious accident."
