This morning I attended the 'Find Your Talent' rehearsals from children from several primary schools across my constituency.

There will be a 20 minute performance in Manchester later today involving a quintet from the Halle Orchestra and the children will accompany them on drums, harps and a range of other instruments.

The children were superb and the rehearsal left me in no doubt that their performance later today will be excellent.

I then went on to Manchester Oxford Road train station to unveil a plaque to mark the 40th anniversary of Barbara Castle's Transport Act. Barbara Castle, who was the first female Transport Secretary, has also had a train named after her and it was great to have the opportunity to celebrate her achievements and meet her relatives, including her niece.

It was also interesting to reflect on how transport in the North-west, and indeed the country, has been greatly improved since the Transport Act of 1968 and that this is a fitting tribute to the work begun by Barbara Castle.

After taking part in a fringe event and debate on transport, I met a large group of scouts from across Greater Manchester.

I listened to their views on a range of subjects including crime, obesity and how they aim to influence politics.

I was impressed by their interest in political issues and the mature and articulate way in which they relayed their opinions to me.

The rest of my day was spent attending speeches and debates in the Conference Hall and touring the stands of exhibitors and community groups in the hall. I will also be meeting and talking to delegates and visitors who are participating at the conference."
