An intrepid group of superheroes helped to raise £500 for a disabled Bury boy’s new charity.

Members of the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity collected money at pubs from Ramsbottom to Bury all day last Sunday in fancy dress.

Joshua, right, who lives in Walshaw Road, was left severely disabled after he suffered a brain tumour and to celebrate his 13th birthday on August 10, his family and trustees of the charity have set a themselves a new fundraising target.

Throughout August and September they will take part in a range of activities, and aim to raise £13,000 by the end of September to improve the lives of children like Joshua with brain tumours and provide support after their surgery.

The fancy dress challenge was the first of these events and Joshua’s mother, Dawn Fidler, said as well as raising money it helped to improve the profile of the newly-established charity.

She said: “It was a brilliant sunny day, with lots of giggles and fundraising, as well as raising awareness of Josh’s new charity around Bury. The route took us 13 hours and, despite it being a quiet day for a weekend, we raised over £500 towards our target of £13,000.”

The team dressed in outfits, including The Hulk, Bananaman and Captain America.

Their route started at Room 54 in Ramsbottom for a superheroes breakfast, through Bolton Road West, into Greenmount and Tottington, and calling at the Robert Peel and Wyldes in Bury town centre before finishing at Automatic cafe.

Dawn added: “Thank you to everyone who beeped at us along the way, kindly donated and special thanks to Room 54 in Ramsbottom for our breakfast and The Wellington on Bolton Road who gave us a real super hero welcome!”

Joshua, who attends Elms Bank School in Whitefield, was diagnosed with a tumour at the age of three, and he underwent lifesaving brain surgery, which left him in a coma for three months.

His home recently underwent adaptations costing £28,000 supported by their fundraising campaign.

Further events are planned, including skydives on September 22, and zumbathons on September 29, as well as a golf day and 13 cake eating challenges.
