DETECTIVES are investigating a report of rape in the early hours of Sunday in Bolton town centre.
Police officers launched an investigation after the report, which was made by a 39-year-old woman.
Police were called to Churchgate just before 5.30am on Sunday where they found the woman, who told them she had been raped a short time earlier.
An area just inside the grounds of Bolton Parish Church was cordoned off with police tape, near the side entrance in Silverwell Street.
A police officer stood guard, with a crime scene investigation van also parked in the grounds and a tactical aid unit van in Silverwell Street.
A community support officer was also at the scene throughout yesterday afternoon.
A police spokesman said: “The investigation is at an early stage and a crime scene remains in place.
“The victim is receiving support from specially trained officers.”
Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 0161 8561741 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
