YOUNGSTERS were given a helping hand by supermarket workers to build a sandpit and picnic area at their school.
Sixteen staff from The Co-operative’s food stores in Bolton spent the day painting, building and gardening at SS Osmund and Andrew’s Primary School, helping to complete an outdoor sandpit, picnic area and a stage for the pupils.
In addition, members of the community made donations in-store which enabled the team to buy a worm bin for the school.
The school in Breightmet, was one of three Bolton groups to win the Co-operative’s community challenge, meaning it was awarded an eight-strong community squad to complete projects to benefit the local area and £200 towards materials.
Emma Bonfiglio, a reception teacher at the school, said: “We are delighted with the support from The Co-operative.
“I was so surprised to have won the competition and delighted at the results — it really has helped and made such a big difference.
“The school is continually exploring ways for our children to learn outside the classroom in fun, creative and engaging ways.”
Janet Green, manager of The Co-operative food store in Breightmet, said: “It was hard work but great fun too and very rewarding.
“The competition really brought to life how co-operation and working together can bring about the changes that people would like to see in their communities.”
The initiative forms part of The Co-operative’s employee volunteering scheme, which gives staff a chance to make a difference in the communities where they live and work.
It involved staff from 11 Co-operative food stores across Bolton.
The two other winners of the competition, who will also receive a visit from The Co-operative’s community hit squad and £200 towards materials, were Bromley Cross Village Hall and The Friends of Westhoughton Station.
