Smoothie sales have soared over the past five years as health-conscious shoppers reach for the fruit drinks.

Britons got through 34 million litres of smoothies last year - up from 6.3 million litres in 2001, according to market analysts Mintel.

The crushed fruit concoctions - some of which also include yoghurt or milk - have moved from being a niche product into the mainstream. Two of the best-known brands are Innocent and P&J.

Sales of all smoothies rose by 523 per cent to hit £134 million in the five years to 2006.

And the popularity of the drinks has still not peaked, with consumption on track to almost treble by 2011, Mintel predicts.

More companies will launch new types of smoothie which are likely to push the average price down, according to the Smoothies in the UK report.

Mintel senior market analyst Vivianne Ihekweazu said growing concerns about health and obesity would make the fruit drinks even more popular.
