BOGUS charity clothing collectors could take advantage of people hoping to get rid of unwanted Christmas presents, Bolton South East MP Brian Iddon has warned.
Dr Iddon is advising Bolton householders to beware of bogus collectors who push leaflets through doors implying they are helping the poor and needy, but instead sell the clothes and pocket the proceeds.
He said: "Bogus clothing collectors want to fool the public and take money from legitimate charities.
"If you only make one resolution this year, make it carrying out a few simple checks next time a clothing leaflet drops through your letterbox."
Dr Iddon advises householders to check whether the collector has a registered charity number by calling 0845 3000218 and whether the leaflet gives an address and landline so its claims can be verified.
