A FUEL company from Bolton has finished runner-up for a national honour in energy innovation.
Bolton Alternative Fuels Cooperative (BAFC) was commended at the Energy Saving Trust Fleet Hero awards for turning cooking oil into a useable fuel.
Company treasurer Andrew Boardman claims the "biodiesel" is a more practical alternative to petroleum fuels as it is significantly better for the environment.
He said: "The Biodiesel we create is 80pc more friendly than regular diesel and it is biodegradable. No modification is needed to any diesel car, but in winter we recommend a 50-50 mix of the two."
The cooperative already collects used waste from restaurants and food outlets across Bolton, and is hoping to attract more companies to join up and supply them with oil.
They are offering to take away waste cooking oil from local restaurants for free, as an alternative to pouring the waste down the drains.
Part of the BAFC research was funded by a £5,000 grant from Bolton Community and Voluntary Services. For further details visit www.boltoncommunity.co.uk/bafc
