A TERRIFIED woman suffered injuries after she was attacked by two dogs in the street.

The dogs - a Rottweiler and a Bull Mastiff - bit through her coat and trousers and left her bleeding from wounds.

The woman, who had been walking to work in Everest Road, Atherton, took shelter in the home of Derek and Sheila Shaw.

Earlier, Mr Shaw had called the police when he saw the dogs prowling in the street.

He had been looking out for his wife, Sheila, who was due home from work.

When she arrived home, she parked the car in the driveway but was too scared to get out of the car because she had attracted the attention of the dogs.

Mr Shaw, aged 63, said: "I went to the front door and all hell broke loose. She was trying to get out of the car but the dogs were trying to get at her.

"She had to make a dash for the door and I managed to shut it before they got in. She was really shocked and upset."

Mr Shaw called the police again because he was worried the dogs would attack a child.

"It was the school holidays and there are usually children playing in the street, so I went to the door to keep the dogs' attention until the police came," he said.

"They kept running towards me and I kept shutting the door."

But the dogs got bored and turned on the woman, who was walking past Mr and Mrs Shaw's home.

"She started to panic and scream and I could see the dogs were having a go at her, so I shouted for her to get into the house."

The woman got inside and was looked after by Mr and Mrs Shaw until the police and her boyfriend arrived.

"She was shaking," said Mr Shaw. "Her coat was shredded and her trousers were ripped where the dogs had bitten through and she was bleeding from a lot of little wounds."

It is believed the dogs are owned by an Everest Road resident.

Police are investigating.

A spokesman said: "Police were called to Everest Road at 1.45pm on Thursday, December 21, following reports that a woman had been bitten by a dog.

"A woman suffered minor abrasions to her back in the incident."
