Conmen posing as utilities officials tried to trick their way into a string of homes, police have warned.
Two men, claiming to be gas or water board engineers, called at homes on, and in the area of, Wigan Road, Leigh on Monday afternoon.
Although the pair did not manage to gain entry to any of the addresses, police are warning residents, particularly the elderly, to be wary of callers.
The men were claiming to need to test the taps because of work that was due to be carried out along the road.
Residents have given similar descriptions of two men.
They have been described as white, between 18 and 30 years old with Irish or Liverpool accents.
One man is approximately 5ft 8ins tall, of stocky build and was wearing a blue jumper and gloves.
The other man is slim, approximately 5ft 10ins and was wearing a grey jumper and gloves.
Police say homeowners should check that any callers have identification.
