RESIDENTS in Kearsley who won a campaign against a waste transfer station near their homes are gearing up for another fight.

European company Wai Sang have made an application to use a unit on Lyon Road Industrial Estate to recycle plastics.

The company plan to sort and grade the materials before transporting it off the site.

But residents - who battled against a similar plan in 2004 - are furious and want Bolton Coucil to reject the application.

Edith Wadley, who lives on Springfield Road, said neighbours already had to endure noise, vibration and pollution.

She said: "We have enough traffic on the road from this industrial estate at all hours of the day and we don't want anymore heavy vehicles.

"It is a bone of contention with the residents and it is so close to the school."

Rachel Glazebrook, headteacher of George Tomlinson High School, has written an objection letter to the council on behalf of the school.

She said: "We are doing our best to ensure that our students get the benefit of all the government initiatives of tackling ill-health, poor diet and increased exercise.

"The fumes from increased exhaust transmissions and noise pollution are an added concern."

Residents battled in 2004 when Bolton Skip Hire wanted to unload rubbish and allow some of it to be recycled at the site. Planning permission was refused after complaints from 85 neighbours.

The agent for the Wai Sang application, Paul Sedgwick, was unavailable for comment.
