A MULTI-MILLION pound makeover of Bolton's council houses will be spread evenly across the town, says Bolton's housing chief.

Bolton at Home, the management company which controls the town's 18,769 council homes, was this week given a £25 million cash boost from the Government.

The company now hopes to spend more than £42 million from April 2007 to March 2008 improving its housing stock.

Cllr Noel Spencer, chairman of Bolton At Home, travelled to Number 10 Downing Street on Tuesday to speak to Prime Minister Tony Blair and Communities Secretary and Bolton West MP Ruth Kelly about the funding.

He said: "We are very happy with the allocation we have been given.

"We were talking about how we could best spend the money and about the future once the decent homes standards have been achieved."

Some of the cash is also likely to be spent on helping council estates fight anti-social behaviour.

Cllr Spencer said the cash would also go towards redesigning certain areas to improve the layouts of estates. But he said that no specific plans had yet been made.

"There are no specifics but every area of the town will get its share," he added.

Bolton at Home hopes to have completed improvement by March 2008 - two years ahead of Government targets.

Renovations will include: l £8.1m on new kitchens and bathrooms l £8.3m on external refurbishments l £5.3m on heating and ventilation improvements Between 2003 and 2008, Bolton at Home will have invested a total of £250m in housing and environmental improvements.

To date, heating improvements have been made on 9,152 homes, external refurbishments have been carried out on 8,239 houses, with 5,381 homes being re-wired and 6,611 houses having new kitchens and bathrooms.

The £25 million follows an £80 million boost given to Bolton at Home in 2004 to bring housing up to 21st Century standards.

The scheme formed part of a £1 billion Government home improvement programme to be carried out over 30 years.
