A MAJOR route through Bolton town centre will be reduced to one lane from next weekend for emergency sewer works.

United Utilities needs to close two of the three lanes on Moss Bank Way, near the junction of the A666, Blackburn Road, from May 25. It is to allow engineers safe working room to repair a collapsed sewer.

Dot matrix signs and road signage will give drivers advance warning on the approach roads.

Dan Eastham, United Utilities engineering contractor, said: “Lane closures are never welcome, especially on such a busy route as this, but it is essential that we repair this collapsed sewer.

“The sewer is nearly three metres deep, which is why we need such a large excavation to work safely.

“We have liaised closely with Bolton Council highways department and the work is being carried out during the half term holiday to help minimise disruption. We expect to get the job done in a week.”
