A SCHOOLGIRL from Bolton will be charged with arson in connection with a shop blaze which claimed the life of a firefighter.

Police have revealed that on Monday evening officers went to the Bolton home of a 15-year-old girl — who cannot be named for legal reasons — to serve a court summons.

The fire broke out a Paul’s Hair World in Manchester city centre.

Firefighter Stephen Hunt, pictured, was among the crews called to deal with the blaze on July 13 last year.

The 38-year-old, from New Road, Radcliffe, was injured and died later in hospital.

Mr Hunt, of a father-of-two, was based at Manchester’s Philips Park Fire Station and was fighting the blaze with about 60 colleagues.

After the tragedy, fire officers and detectives from Greater Manchester Police’s major incident team began an investigation into the cause of the fire assisted by staff from fire services in Merseyside and West Yorkshire.

On July 15 last year, two 15-year-old girls were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and later released on bail after providing statements to police.

Their bail was cancelled on July 16.

Following Monday’s court summons a 15-year-old girl has been ordered to appear at Manchester Youth Court on June 2 to face a charge of arson — reckless as to whether life endangered — under section 1 subsection 2 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971.

A plaque in tribute to Mr Hunt was unveiled at the spot where he lost his life.

It reads: “The plaque is dedicated to the memory of Firefighter Stephen Hunt who lost his life fighting a fire in this building on Saturday, July 13, 2013 serving the community he loved.”

A memorial service for Mr Hunt will be held on Sunday July 13 at St Ann's Church, St Ann's Square, Manchester at 2pm.
