A TRADITION stretching back 115 years ended with the closure of Openshaw's wholsale fish counter on Saturday.

The wholesalers had sold fish over some form of a counter since 1891, though in recent years the operation had been scaled back to just one counter at its Nile Street warehouse.

As well as wholesale sales to restaurants, chip shops and Bolton fish market, they had a thriving retail trade.

The management says it is closing the counter because it needs to meet hygiene standards for a food preparation site and now orders can only be taken over the phone with deliveries the following day.

That is no consolation for those buyers, either wholesale or retail, who like to see the quality of fish they are buying. It remains to be seen whether this move will adversely affect sales.
