FORMER Bolton Wanderers defender Danny Shittu was part of the Nigeria squad that travelled to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The much-travelled defender was signed by Wanderers manager Gary Megson in August 2008 for £2million but his career never took off at the Reebok where he made only 12 appearances before leaving for Millwall in 2010.

He was a regular in the Nigeria side that won all six of their qualifying games to reach the finals.

But it was a different story for his nation once they got to South Africa where they finished bottom of their group.

Shittu played in all three games as they lost to Argentina and Greece followed by a 2-2 draw with South Korea.

Earlier that year, Shittu played every game of the 2010 African Cup of Nations where he helped his side to a third-place finish.

After making his debut in 2002 against Paraguay, he went on to win 32 caps before retiring from international football to focus on his domestic career.
