Health reporter Charlotte Dobson is giving up alcohol for Go Sober 2014. Here is her weekly update .

I HAVE been sober for seven days now and so far it’s been lousy.

For the first couple days, I was coasting. I’d been at a wedding the weekend before so I was happy to never lay eyes on another G&T... for at least a week.

And then I came down with a lousy cold — an instant thirst killer. But a busy weekend at work soon put an end to that.

As I got better, the old craving for a stress-busting glass of wine crept up on me. It’s not that I sink a glass as soon as I walk through front door. I just miss something to look forward to.

How often do you hear someone say: “Mmm, I can’t wait to get stuck into a glass of fizzy water when I get home”? That’s right, never.

My mum and I have been united in our struggle.

We’ve been constantly updating each other via text: “4pm on a Saturday, still not touched a drop.”

Or: “Slept like a log last night. Must be all this clean living.”

Both of us agree we’re yet to get the sober glow but I’m confident that will come with time. What has surprised me are the number of people who have said to me they could never give up.

I don’t think it’s because people like that have a drink problem.

I just think we rely on alcohol to unwind and let off some steam at the weekend. Friday night is looming!

Speaking of the weekend, a dry Friday night is looming.

I’ll raise a Pellegrino to that.
