FAMILY, friends and neighbours of a holidaymaker who plunged to his death from the 14th floor of a Mexican hotel have paid a unique tribute to him.

They launched hundreds of balloons into the sky at the Hardy Hall pub, in Church Street, Little Lever, each carrying a personal message to Adrian Fletcher, the man they knew as "Flecky".

Just a few days ago, Mr Fletcher was with his girlfriend, Lisa Miller, at the five-star Riu Cancun hotel in Cancun, Mexico, where they were looking forward to seeing two of their friends get married next weekend.

But today, friends and family are continuing to come to terms with his death and have been paying their tributes to the man they knew affectionately as "Flecky".

Best friend Phil Hales said: "He was an amazing person, larger than life and twice as nice."

Mobile phone salesman Adrian, aged 34, of Grosvenor Street, Little Lever, fell from the top floor of the hotel at lunchtime on Thursday.

He had flown to Mexico with a group of 20 friends, all from Little Lever, as guests at the wedding of his friends, John Rourke, aged 41, and Lisa Cooksey, aged 30.

His girlfriend Lisa, from Aspull in Wigan, was due to be the chief bridesmaid.

But hotel staff at the 569-room resort said he and Lisa were seen having a "very forceful argument" and minutes later, they both fell from the balcony of their own room to another balcony one floor below.

As the row was said to have continued, it is then claimed Adrian swallowed-dived to the ground below.

Some of Adrian's friends were by the poolside when he fell from the balcony. They are still too shocked to discuss the incident.

After the launch of the balloons yesterday, Steve Hoyle, 46-year-old owner of Hardy Hall, said: "We're still not 100 per cent sure what has gone on. There's just total disbelief. Some of the group were by the pool when he fell and they're just devastated.

"We're still in contact with people over there and no one can really say what's happened. Adrian was a massive guy and when he walked into a room it lit up. He really was an angel on earth and he always had a glow around him."

A collection was also held at Hardy Hall, raising £1,500 - money that will be used to help Adrian's family pay for funeral costs and any other expenses the tragedy will cause for them.

More than 300 people have also paid glowing tributes to Adrian on The Bolton News website - the biggest online response this newspaper has ever had.

Best friend Mr Hales, aged 33, said: "Words can't describe how I'm feeling. He was both my children's godparents and we did everything together and I just don't know where I'm going to go from here.

"I'm glad so many people have turned up today. His funeral won't just stop everything in Little Lever - it will stop the whole of Bolton."

Miss Miller was questioned by police as a witness, but she was released after members of the wedding party paid her £500 bail.

Speaking at the family home in St David's Crescent, Aspull, her father, Robert, said: "I have spoken to Lisa and she sounds OK, but obviously she's very shocked and upset. She's no longer speaking to police."

Police are still investigating Adrian's death and it is not known when his body will be flown back to the UK.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said no one has so far been charged in connection with Mr Fletcher's death.

He said: "The police in Mexico are continuing to investigate his death.

"As far as we are aware, no one has been arrested or charged yet."

He would not comment on when Adrian's body would be flown back to Britain.

Friends of the wedding couple said they had been told the wedding was still going ahead.
