HERE we have 12-year-old Melissa Crook who was crowned Rose Queen of St James' Church, Breightmet in 1979.

She is pictured at the church gala, in July, with her retinue of attendants.

The traditional Rose Queen pageant has long been associated with churches and other organisation and was particularly popular in the Lancashire area although not so much so today.

Crowds would line the streets to watch the annual parade and the proud youngsters would dress in all their finery and thoroughly enjoy the occasion.

As you can see from this lovely image the girls are wearing beautiful costumes — all would be hand made and carefully stitched to ensure the group looked the part on this special day.

Melissa would be just one of many young girls enjoying the celebrations all over Bolton in the summer.

The retiring queen would usually be involved in the coronation.

There would often be a band playing and fun and festivities could last the full day as everyone gathered to enjoy the event.

It would be a very proud moment for the parents of the Rose Queen and her attendees who were centre of attention for the day.

Were you a proud Rose Queen or does your church or organisation still organise such events? If so get in touch and tell us all about it. Contact Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
