A Salford man who vanished with his two children following a custody row has contacted police.

Officers were "extremely concerned" for Anthony Whitter, aged 34, who disappeared with his two sons from his home last Wednesday.

There had been concerns for the safety of the two boys, Darcell, aged 11, and five-month-old Sharnay, but Mr Whitter contacted authorities to assure them of the children's welfare.

Greater Manchester Police said Mr Whitter, also known as Shaun Roberts, was extremely depressed.

He does not have important medication for his diabetes with him. Officers had feared he might have harmed himself or the youngsters.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Officers have received assurances in respect of the safety of the children and are continuing to speak to Mr Whitter to support their continuing negotiations."

Mr Whitter left his house in Pyramid Walk in Higher Broughton on Wednesday.

Police believe he may be in the London area.

He is about 5ft 11ins tall and of heavy build. He is blind in one eye and wears black-framed glasses.
