The man struck at the house of the 71-year-old in Thaxted Place, Heaton, at about 1.30pm on Friday.
He claimed to work for a heating company and said he needed to carry out essential work.
Once inside, he distracted the woman and stole a purse from her handbag, before saying he needed to get tools from his van and leaving the house.
He was white, aged about 45, 5ft 11ins tall, of medium build, with short dark hair and was softly spoken. He was wearing a navy blue jacket and white trainers.
