A WOMAN who fled to America after assaulting an 11-month-old baby has been jailed for life.

Nicola Radford, aged 21, of Haweswater Avenue, Higher Ince, Wigan, was found guilty of four counts of causing grievous bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday.

Radford, who had been caring for the baby, fled to America when she realised that police wanted to speak to her in November, 2004. She was deported under American immigration laws and was escorted back to Manchester.

She admitted putting her hand over the baby's mouth and stopping him breathing on three occasions and also to pulling his right leg and fracturing it.

Radford stated that she had done this because the baby was crying and she could not get him to stop. She maintained she never meant to hurt him.

She was sentenced to life imprisonment for each of the charges, to run concurrently. The judge recommended that she served a minimum of 42 months. She has also been disqualified from working with children.
