DISCUSSIONS are taking place in a bid to avert industrial action in libraries including those in Leigh and Atherton.
The talks over proposals to introduce more flexible terms and conditions for all library staff took place between Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and the trade union Unison. The move has caused controversy as staff have a contractual right to enhanced pay for weekend working, which could be lost in the new deal.
The discussions resulted in both Unison and the Trust agreeing to continue open communications and to discuss further the fair implementation of flexible working patterns and conditions for library staff.
Unison indicated that strike action would only be taken as a very last resort.
The Trust, which manages Wigan Borough's 16 libraries, which include those in Leigh, Atherton and Golborne, are proposing to provide greater opportunities for more flexible opening hours to be introduced if and where there is strong public demand.
