THOUGHTFUL youngsters enjoyed a school day with a difference by giving a litter-strewn road a fresh lease of life.
Pupils at Chapelfield Primary School in Clough Street had noticed large amounts of rubbish at the side of nearby Stand Lane.
Residents along the road had also complained about the waste, which was left on the verge behind a wall at the side of the pavement.
So children from Chapelfield’s school council decided to do something about it – by undertaking an hour-long litter pick.
Kitted out with gloves and litter-pickers provided by Bury Council, nine children from across the year groups took part.
Headteacher Mr Malcolm Gate said: “The children had been noticing the amount of rubbish in Stand Lane and wanted to make it a more attractive area.
“Litter is always at the front of our agenda in school.
“There is no litter in the school grounds or in Clough Street – the children understand this issue and they do not like litter.”
Mr Gate said that in one square metre of land targeted, 28 Fosters cans were removed.
