A good Samaritan who went to the aid of a woman assaulted in a pub had every bone in his face broken in a "horrific attack".

Terry Malone, aged 53, was hit over the head with a heavy porcelain object and kicked repeatedly in the street, in Blackley, Manchester.

Mr Malone and another man had chased after the attacker, after he had become abusive and assaulted a woman in the Pleasant pub in Chapel Lane.

Police said Mr Malone, who suffers from asbestosis, received serious facial injuries and will probably lose half the sight in his left eye.

His lips needed to be stitched and he lost about 10 teeth in the attack in Crab Lane shortly after 2am last Saturday.

He is due to undergo surgery later.

Detective Constable Mark Boon from Grey Mare Lane said: "This was a horrific attack in which every bone in the victim's face was broken.

"We have information to suggest that several people witnessed the attack on Mr Malone but have not yet come forward to speak to us about it. I'd like to reassure them that any information that we receive will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

"Mr Malone has been very seriously injured and I'd like them to search their conscience after seeing the extent of his injuries and realise that the person responsible for such a ferocious attack is still at large.

"We need their help to make sure that he is brought to justice."
