A WOMAN was rescued by six firefighters after she got stuck in a swamp-like patch of mud.

Esther Mann, aged 25, of Pimlott Road, Hall i'th' Wood, got trapped in Eagley Brook, behind the Cineworld cinema in Waters Meeting Road, at 1am on Saturday morning.

She got stuck up to her knees and when she could not free herself, rang a friend for help.

The friend went to the scene and called 999 when they couldn't pull her out.

Firefighters from Bolton north and Bolton central fire stations dug Miss Mann out by hand.

She was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with suspected hyperthermia and was later discharged.

Gary Hodgson, Watch Manager for Bolton North, said: "We don't know how she came to be stuck in the mud, but we believe she may have been walking along the bank and slipped.

"She had been there for about half an hour and it was very cold.

"Six of us had to dig her out by hand, and we wrapped her in a space blanket and she was taken to hospital."
