AMIR Khan has been named as one of Britain's most powerful and influential Muslims.

The Bolton-born sporting hero is featured on the top 100 list of the most influential Muslims, which aims to highlight the positive contribution of the Islamic community to the life of the nation.

His name appears against the like of cricketer Imran Khan, Harrods boss Mohamad Al Fayed and actor Art Malik. Business officials, politicians and those working in the public sector are also named on the list, compiled by the Islamic Bank of Britain.

Amir, aged 20, shot to fame after winning a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. He has since turned professional and won his first 10 fights.

He next takes to the ring on Saturday against France's Mohammed Medjadji.

Amir said: "I think it's great. I am just being who I am. I am boxer at the end of the day, and if that influences youngsters to get off the streets and do the same thing, then it's a good thing and it's good to be recognised for that."

Amir said he thinks he has shown how a person can be Muslim and a patriotic British sportsman at the same time and thinks the public has responded to the dedication he shows to his religion, his sport and his family.

"I am just a normal person and it is sport that has made me what I am. It's only two or three years since I hit the big time and this has happened. Imagine what it will be like when I'm World Champion!"

The Muslim list, unveiled at an awards ceremony in London on Saturday, was drawn up by a panel of judges after they received 5,200 nominations from the Muslim Power 100 website. It does not rank those nominated in order of importance.

The Muslim Community in Britain contributes more than £31 billion to the British economy each year, and the purpose of the Muslim Power 100 is to promote the positive aspects of Islam and highlight the contribution made by Muslims in Britain.

Sultan Choudhury of the Islamic Bank of Britain said: "We feel that it is now moe important than ever to recognise the valuable contribution the Muslim community has made."
