AS nine more youths receive anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) Bolton Council has been applauded for its tough stance on anti-social behaviour.

The young troublemakers, aged between 16 and 19, now cannot associate with each other and as a result many residents can relax a little.

Having said that, it is no use whatsoever to threaten youths with being locked up for breaking their Asbos if nothing subsequently happens.

How many times do we read that if an ASBO order is breached the perpetrator could be sent to custody for up to five years - but when has that ever happened? Until the courts get tough with these young louts nothing really will change.

It is good news though that the efforts Bolton Council is making, along with the police and other agencies, to tackle and reduce anti-social behaviour, has been recognised with a Government sponsored Beacon award.

Council officers have worked very hard to reduce the incidence of anti-social behaviour in all areas of the town and should be congratulated for their efforts, but I am sure many people would say - keep the pressure on.
