Police are continuing their appeal for information after an assault in Wigan town centre which left a Lithuanian man fighting for his life.

Detective Inspector Steve Crimmins from Wigan CID said: "So far we have received little response from the public about this incident on Sunday, March 11, and we are appealing directly to the consciences of anyone who may have been in the area to come forward and speak with us.

"We are particularly appealing to a man, described as being of Asian appearance, who went over and attempted to break up the fight. You may not even realise that this was the same incident, but if you did intervene and try to calm down a situation on Standishgate that Sunday, then please contact police. You may hold vital information that could help us track down the offenders."

The 37-year-old victim was with two friends near Debenhams on Standishgate at about 2am when he was attacked. Officers are still looking for two men and a woman in connection with the incident.

The victim went to the Wigan Royal Infirmary with a serious head injury and was later transferred to Hope Hospital where he remains in a critical condition. One of his friends was punched in the attack but only sustained minor injuries.

One of the attackers has been described as white, aged in his mid 20s, around 6' tall, of stocky build, with short, light brown hair. He was wearing a white t-shirt. The other man is described as white, 20-22-years-old, of medium build, with short dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing. The woman is described as white and in her early 20s.

DI Crimmins continued; "This victim is fighting for his life in hospital and I am determined to find whoever is responsible for putting him in this condition.

"I am confident that it is only a matter of time before we identify the offenders and I would urge them to come forward sooner rather than later.

"If you think you know anything about this incident then please contact Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
