Troubled low-cost supermarket Kwik Save is reported to be planning a wave of major job cuts as it struggles to get the business back on track.

The group is understood to be telling employees this week about possible staff cuts, with the headcount in some stores to be halved, according to a report in The Sunday Times.

Kwik Save announced last month that it had secured a £50 million rescue package from a private consortium.

The discount grocery chain has suffered since being spun out of Somerfield last February, when it was bought by a consortium called Back to the Future, led by fashion retailer Peacock Groups chief executive Richard Kirk.
