THE only good thing about Steve McClaren as England manager is that he is English.

Unfortunately, he has shown in the last three European Championship qualification matches that he is not the man for the job.

One goal in five games and consistently underperforming players are neon-flashing signs that something is desperately wrong with England under McClaren.

It is an indictment of the man that England are struggling so embarrassingly in a qualifying group which should be there for the taking.

Certainly, under Sven-Goran Eriksson, England would have been home and dry by now, such was the Swede's record in qualifying matches.

We have taken such a major backward step in qualifying matches under McClaren that one dreads to think how we would fare in tournament finals where Eriksson's sides came in for so much criticism.

The FA estimate it would cost English football £100million if they failed to qualify for the European Championship Finals.

Balance that against the £2.5million it would cost to sack McClaren and it's a no brainer.

England should get rid of him before it's too late, regardless of what happen's against the minnows of Andorra tomorrow.

The next game isn't until June 6, and the one after that on September 8, which gives the FA plenty of time to appoint a successor who should have one thing in common with McClaren - he must be English.
