WORK to repair an underground electricity cable in Churchgate is under way.

Council contractors have ripped up newly laid flagstones and cobblestones outside the Ye Olde Man and Scythe pub to allow United Utilities engineers to access the cable.

It supplies electricity to 125 town centre businesses which are currently being powered from another source.

The repairs, which cover a section of the road measuring around 20 metres by 2 metres, are expected to last until Sunday.

During that time, the carriageway and pavements will remain open.

The work comes just months after a £900,000 scheme to pedestrianise the historic street was completed.

It began last June and involved removing, cleaning and relaying thousands of cobbles.
