ALL roads lead to Rome - at least they do for charity fundraiser Oliver Wotherspoon.

The artist is organising a charity bike ride from his home in Bolton to the Eternal City.

And he hopes his gruelling trek will raise awareness as well as funds for the Bolton-based Children's Opportunity Group.

The organisation was started by his aunt, Nicola Pearcy in the early 1980s. It provides a variety of services for children with learning difficulties or special requirements, aged from birth to 19, and their families.

Mrs Pearcy's daughter Ailsa, aged 28, who has Down's syndrome, helps out at COG and works to raise awareness of the organisation.

Oliver, aged 25, who lives in Daisy Hill, said: "The reason for setting this challenge is to create awareness of my chosen charity, COG, and the learning difficulties it aims to help. I am dyslexic and know the challenges facing young people with learning disabilities in today's society. I have grown up with this charity."

Oliver is hoping to embark on his trip at the beginning of June and complete it within four weeks.

"I am in the process of selecting the best route that does not involve any motorways or dual carriageways," he said.

"The route will involve mainly cycle paths through England, France, Switzerland and down through Italy into Rome.

"It will be a completely different experience for me.

"It will be hard work but seeing all the sights and travelling through different countries will be worth it.

"I intend to ride the journey on a touring bike, carrying all my camping gear and necessary supplies in panniers attached to the bike."

Oliver is hoping to raise £6,000, which will support the charity's application for two new mini-buses from The Variety Club.

He is looking for sponsors, and, in particular, a bike manufacturer or a dealer.
