YOUNGSTERS on a hospital children's ward had their playtime fun washed away after a burst water pipe destroyed thousands of pounds worth of toys.

The pipe burst in the playroom at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury where all the ward's toys and play equipment are stored, including a television, DVD player, DVDs and games consoles along with specialist equipment for children with special needs.

Tables and chairs were also destroyed along with storage cupboards, play mats, an overhead projector, jigsaws, board games and wall murals.

An appeal has now been launched for replacement toys to help keep up the children's spirits as they undergo treatment.

Ann-Marie Smith, divisional nurse manager, said: "Play is an integral part of a child's recovery and it is essential that the appropriate toys for the child's age and stage of development are readily available.

"The equipment and stock had been built up over a number of years. Some of the toys and equipment were very kindly donated by parents, carers and, in some instances, children themselves."

The ward is looking for items such as prams, ride-on cars, baby toys, bricks and Lego, art equipment, dolls and board games.

While the ward appreciates all support, it is requesting only new equipment and toys because of safety issues. Due to difficulty in keeping them clean, cuddly toys cannot be accepted.

Ms Smith said: "We've already had donations coming in which we're really grateful for."
