Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka had the club's fans begging him to sign a new contract after firing Watford ever closer to relegation.
There were chants of sign him up' from the home stands as talks continue over a contract extension, and manager Gareth Southgate is keeping his fingers crossed.
He said: "Talks are ongoing and Mark is having a think about things.
"I am very relaxed about it. He knows my position on it and I respect the fact that he wants time to think about things."
Viduka slotted in winger Stuart Downing's cross to give Boro the lead.
Watford conjured a leveller through a Damien Francis volley but Boro quickly retook the lead as Chris Riggott deflected in George Boateng's shot.
On-loan keeper Ben Foster made a series of fine saves in the second half but Viduka grabbed his double before setting up Fabio Rochemback for Middlesbrough's fourth.
