Martyn Skipper has been promoted to the senior rank of fourth dan black belt.

The Bolton-based instructor passed with flying colours last month. The 43-year-old, who takes classes at Edgworth School, has been practising karate since 1976 and now holds five different black belt ranks.

As well as fourth dan in Shukokai karate, he holds third dan in the Shotokan and Henka-Ryu styles of karate, and first dan in ju jutsu and in Taiho Jutsu.

The test in Bury required Martyn to demonstrate his technical and fighting ability, and was overseen by the Technical Committee of the Amateur Martial Association, including its chief executive, Tom Hibbert MBE.

Martyn is an assistant instructor at Tower Shukokai, Darwen's oldest established karate club, with classes held at Darwen Vale on Friday nights and Edgworth School on Mondays and Saturday mornings.
