Four Italian men have walked free from court following violent clashes between Manchester United and AS Roma fans.

Two were given conditional discharges and one was bound over to be of good behaviour. The fourth supporter pleaded not guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and was bailed to return for trial later this year.

Police also charged 12 English fans with various offences. They will appear before magistrates on April 18.

Hundreds of fans were caught up in crowd trouble outside Old Trafford before Tuesday's Champions League tie. Police said incidents were "isolated" and were dealt with quickly, while a United spokesman was "entirely happy" with the policing and security arrangements.
