AN ONLINE campaign launched by The Bolton News to highlight the number of potholed roads in the borough is proving to be a huge success.

Readers have been logging on to our website to add problem roads.

And the campaign has won praise from The institute of Advanced Motorists, who say good road conditions are key to safe driving.

Roy Sammons, chairman of Bolton Advanced Motorists, said: "I fully support this campaign because anything that improves the roads in Bolton has to be good.

"When the council's budget is reduced, road maintenance is one of the first areas to suffer.

"But potholes cause damage to vehicles and if they are not repaired, they just get bigger. Sorting this out is important because it is dangerous for motorists."

One of the areas highlighted by a reader is Blenheim Road in Breightmet, where the road surface is uneven and in need of repair.

Road maintenance is dealt with by Bolton Council's Highway department, which has a process in place to repair problem potholes.

Cllr John Byre, the council's executive member for the environment, said: "We encourage people to report any potholes but our officers can only be in one place at a time.

"Once they have been reported, we will send an engineer out to examine them and take action from there."

As well as adding sites to our online campaign, you can report potholes to the council's highways department on 01204 333333.
