UNWANTED electrical goods can be handed over for recycling at a supermarket in Bolton town centre on Sunday.

Bolton Council recycling officers will be at Sainsburys in Trinity Street from 10am to 4pm to receive TVs, hi-fis, vacuum cleaners, irons, microwaves and other electrical items.

They will be recycled rather than discarded at landfill sites.

Householders are asked not to take cookers, fridges, freezers, washing machines or dishwashers as they require special disposal.

The event follows a successful trial run in Westhoughton earlier this year when nearly three tonnes of goods were collected.

From July, when the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive comes into force, residents will not be able to put electrical goods in ordinary bins.

All new items will be marked with a crossed-out wheelie bin.

Residents can also recycle unwanted appliances at household waste recycling centres in Raikes Lane, Bolton; Blackhorse Street, Blackrod, and Union Road, Bolton.

Collection of bulkier items can be arranged for a charge of £10 by calling 01204 336633.
