LET us hope the state of the art CCTV equipment installed to help cut vandalism and yobbish behaviour in Little Lever proves to be a success.

A mobile camera has been positioned opposite the Market Street shopping precinct, where groups of 30 to 40 young people regularly gather, and if successful it could lead to the installation of a hi-tech system from which images could be accessed instantly by police.

The youths have been seen drinking, as well as throwing stones at cars and vandalising shops, and it is hoped the camera will act as a deterrent with the possible full hi-tech system leading to the arrests of those causing problems.

Only a few years ago, many people would have had reservations about the use of CCTV, but a survey revealed its installation was what the people of Little Lever most wanted.

It is a sad sign of the times that thousands of pounds of tax payers' money has to be spent on combating yobs vandalising the very areas in which they live.
