WESTHOUGHTON Lions Under-10s took the bragging rights after a 30-18 victory against Portico in the first-ever clash between the two sides.

Cooper Bainbridge set the ball rolling with a try but Portico hit back with a converted try.

The Lions regained the league with a clever try by Zak Taylor, with the Lions threatening Portico's line and moving the ball well, and Taylor spotted a gap to touchdown near the posts.

Taylor doubled his tally for the morning breaking from dummy half and then Sammy Croughan scored the extras.

The Lions would now have to withstand a heavy storm of Portico attacks and put their bodies on the line.

But it would all be for nothing as it remained 14-12.

The Lions continued to have some steel in their defence for the early stages of the second half, restricting Portico's yard gains and putting pressure on the kickers at the end of sets. This would leave the Lions in a great position from which to launch their next set of attacks, it would be more great work in the halves that was to provide the space for Cooper Bainbridge to cross for his second try of the game with Josh Thompson adding the two.

The Lions showed defensive cohesion as they stood up to the challenge and made 14 consecutive tackles to keep Portico out.

Then man-of-the-match Kieran Cook hit the ball like a steam train and braking through multiple defenders raced away to the line.

Back on top in the game and on top on the scoreboard the Lions tails were up as they were finally finding their feet in the game going forward.

It was Jacob Lovett's turn to get on the scoreboard next as he used his pace to score under the posts and Zak Taylor added the extras.

But Portico had the final say as a chip over the top left the Lions cold and they grabbed their third try of the game.

Elsewhere, the Lions Under-16s were forces to pay the penalty for indiscipline losing out 26-4 defeat to Rylands.

Tyler Dwyer-Hodge gave Westhoughton some early cheer with a well-taken try from a scrum.

Despite the missed conversion the Lions maintained their lead until the 20 minute mark when Rylands scored from a break to put themselves 6-4 up.

Some difficult decisions by the officials meant the Lions were not to score again while the Warrington side took advantage to score three converted tries and a penalty that made the final score 26-4.
