BOLTON Golf Club hosted an excellent Lancashire Amateur Championship last weekend when no less than 138 players teed off on the Lostock course in cold and windy conditions.

The eventual winner was 31 year-old Ian Kenwright of Haydock Park who clinched the trophy with a 284 final total with Bury’s Ciaran Doherty in second place just two shots behind.

This was Kenwright’s biggest prize of his life and he attributed his success to his dad, Peter, a long serving professional at Haydock Park.

The Bolton club supplied six players that reached the final two rounds on Sunday when Gareth Hastie produced a final 289 total – nine over par – to claim third place and Rob Taylor finished in 10th spot with a 294 while club-mate Stephen Halliwell completed his tournament in 19th place.

The Lostock boys made another golfing first when the trio of Hastie, Taylor and Halliwell won the Liverpool Team Trophy for the best net over the first two rounds and will go on to play in the England Team finals at Brancepeth Castle Golf Club in County Durham.

And to complete the Bolton home club successes, Taylor won the Wright Trophy with a best net score over the first two rounds.

Anthony Stirling, of Formby and Harwood Golf Club finished in the top 10 prizes when he completed a 293 score-line to bag eighth place. Aaron Harper of Bolton also had a successful championship with a 295 to give him a respectable 12th place.

Liam Ball of Turton made the cut but a 79 in his third round blotted his chances of a top 10 place.

Bolton Golf Club received huge accolades from the Lancashire Championship officials for the enormous work undertaken by over 40 member volunteers together with their staff and officials who were present from early morning to late evening throughout the championship.
