A YOB hurled a stone at a train as it was travelling through Bolton.

The passenger carriage was travelling through the town at about 7.30pm on August 26 when its windscreen was chipped.

The Northern Rail service from Blackpool to Manchester Victoria was close to the all-weather pitch at Bullfield when the stone was thrown, and police say the consequences could have been much worse.

Insp Michelle Wedderburn said: “The stone chipped the windscreen of the train on impact, luckily no-one was injured, but the consequences of such a dangerous act could have been far worse and resulted in serious injury to the driver and passengers.

“I urge anyone who might have witnessed what happened or who has any information about the incident to get in touch to assist us with out enquiries.

“Furthermore anyone who has any knowledge of or witnesses any incidents involving trespass or vandalism on the railways should report it immediately.”

Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 405040, or text 61016, quoting reference PSUB/B7 of 28/08/2015.
