On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,057 prime sheep, comprising of 1,794 prime hoggs & 262 cast ewes & rams.

Lambs again achieved another pleasing average of 184.85p/kg leading in front of many other centres. Mule lambs were exceptionally good to sell with many pens 175p/kg plus.

Cast ewes & rams took a large jump on the week with Mules being at least £10 per head sharper and Swaledales being up £5 per head. Many more ewes are needed to fulfil the demand.

Topping the sale on the day at 253.0p/kg was for a single Beltex hogg from M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park and bought by J & B Fitton, Cowlish Hall Farm.

The top price per head on the day was £110 for a single Texel hogg from J G & R W Nevinson, High House Farm which was bought by Mr M Bowe, Keswick.

In-Lamb Females and Geld Gimmer Hoggs

On Sunday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their first Individual Sale of In-lamb Females & Geld Gimmer Hoggs.

The first sale of its kind was held at Penrith, with the ring side being packed with people from all four corners of the country. Opening the day, judging was held and carried out by Mr J A Alderson, Barras Farm for the Swaledales and Mr B Blaney, Northern Ireland for the Bluefaced Leicesters.

The quality of the sheep on offer from many noted breeders was a credit and all support for this sale was grateful. All classes were good to sell with loads of customers for all breeds.

Topping the sale of £3000 was a stylish, bright 3 shear ewe from Messrs Richardson & Sons, Ghyll House, Dufton. Scanned a single, In-Lamb to the Hallam Sire being purchased by Messrs Bainbridge, Owlands Farm, Richmond.

Closely followed by the reserve champion also from the Ghyll House flock sold for £1700 for a shearling, this being purchased by the noted breeder Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, Patterdale.

In the Bluefaced Leicester category, topping at £1600 from the “Hewgill” flock and also receiving the champion title was an outstanding, smart Geld Gimmer Hogg being purchased by Mr J R Ireland & Sons, Stock How Hall.

Some outstanding lots of Continentals and Suffolks came forward with loads of interest around the ring. Topping this section at £410 was a Suffolk Shearling scanned with twins to the Suffolk being purchased by Messrs Place, Strawberry Howe Farm, Cockermouth.

The Texels topped at £380 for a Texel Shearling from the Thacka flock, Stainton scanned a single to Kakermill Velvet. Mr G Pyman’s run sold tremendously well with buyers knowing the quality and breeding behind this vendor.

Noted Herdwick breeder Mr J Rebanks sold two Herdwick 4 shear ewes both making £260 & £250 with loads or interest in this section.

On Saturday 16th December Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP were pleased to conduct a farm sale at Field Gate, Bampton for the property of Mr Robert Richardson.

Although a bitterly cold morning, a very good crowd bid freely for the tractors, implements and work tools together with a number of vintage tools and artefacts.
